Where burial is not possible, the protection of sub
sea pipes, flexible flowlines and cables against abrasion and impact
has always been a concern for installation contractors and operators
alike.
Methods such as rock-dumping and the laying of concrete mattresses
offer limited protection and have high project 'out turn' costs,
as secondary vessels are usually required. |
The most cost effective method is therefore the use of a protective
'sleeving' system that is installed as the pipe/cable is being laid
or during the load-out operations. In recognition of this, PPL Marine
Products have developed a low-cost, highly effective system called
'PPL-Duct'.
PPL-Duct consists of two cylindrical half-shell mouldings up to
2 metres long (for easy handling) with interlocking dovetailed end
profiles. The inside bore of the mouldings are designed to provide
a close fit, with just a small clearance that allows for manufacturing
tolerances in the flexable pipe/cable. |
 |
The two shells are quickly and easily installed as
pairs (femail end out-board) by means of a corrosion resistant banding
system. Circumferential grooves on the outside of the mouldings are
provided to locate the banding and to provide axial restraint during
bending thus reducing moulding slippage during installation. The band
groove also mean that the system has a smooth outer profile and will
not be subject to snagging during deployment. |
